Automatic Phase Identification: Eliminating Errors in Sensor Phase Assignments

An automated solution to ensure accurate phase identification at all sensor deployment locations.
Download Full Case Study
The challenge

Florida Power & Light (FPL) has deployed tens of thousands of Sentient Energy Line Sensors on their distribution system. The sensors were installed on conductors with phase assignments made based on conductor positions on poles. FPL needed to ensure that the sensor phase assignments were accurate to effectively utilize the sensor data in operations for fault detection and load monitoring.

The Solution

Sentient Energy MM3™ sensors with GPS clock precision and electric-field sensing provide daily phasing analysis, confirmation, exception detection, visualization, and reporting. Exceptions are noted and communicated in reports and in Sentient Energy’s Ample® Phase ID application where FPL can view a summary of exceptions by area, substation and feeder. With Sentient Energy’s Phase ID, FPL has an automated solution to ensure accurate phase identification at all sensor deployment locations.

Key Results

12%

The magnitude of potential phase identification errors found in FPL’s database.

8,000

Additional devices with Auto Phase Identification deployed by FPL in 2017.

100%

Accuracy of phasing information, ensured by Sentient Energy’s line sensors.

Daily

Frequency of phase validation scheduled, eliminating the need for line sensor labels.
